General Chiropractic

How this works:

When you come to our office for your initial consultation (first visit) you will be given an examination and possibly x-rays, depending on your injury or history. Most likely I will adjust your spine on the first visit, however it depends on your condition.

On your second visit, you will get adjusted and I will give you my Report of Findings. The Report of Findings will include all of your information from your examination, x-rays, and your recommended care plan (the care plan varies for each individual patient). Two weeks from your initial consultation date we will do a re-examination to determine how well your body has held and responded to the adjustments.

This is the same process for all patients. If upon your re-examination I feel that you have not improved sufficiently, then we will set another re-exam date in another two weeks. The sooner your body responds to care, the sooner we will decrease the frequency of adjustments.

A majority of patients respond to care within the first two weeks. Age, accompanies with how long the patient has suffered with the problem, and his/her overall health has a great deal to do with how the body is going to respond to care.

Acute Care to Wellness Care

When a patient comes in with a problem or is in pain, he/she is under ACUTE care. Insurance only covers ACUTE Care. Once the pain stabilizes and the pain is gone, we will move our patients to WELLNESS care. Wellness care is not covered by insurance. Once you have recovered and healed enough (verified by your re-exam), we will set you up with one of our Membership/Wellness plans. The memberships make staying healthy affordable for you and your family.

Health for a Lifetime

Best Houston Chiropractic for General Health

Your body was designed to be healthy! When your nervous system is free of interference (Subluxation)... Health Happens!

Chiropractic for Children

The birth process may be one of the most traumatic events of our lives. Even so-called “natural” birthing methods can stress a still-developing spine. The resulting irritation to the nervous system can be the cause of many newborn health complaints. Colic, unexplained crying, poor appetite, breathing problems and allergic reactions can often be traced to nervous system dysfunction caused by a malfunctioning spine.

After head support is achieved, when a baby starts crawling, and a baby’s first few steps should be followed by chiropractic checkups. If neglected, the bumps and falls during this period of rapid growth may lead to serious spinal deformities later in life. This can set the stage for scoliosis, “growing pains,” and a weakened immune system response.

Chiropractic adjusting techniques are modified to fit a child’s size, weight, and unique spinal problem. Parents often report that their children seem healthier than other kids their age. Many spinal problems seen in adults begin in childhood. Proper spinal hygiene is an important key to better health. Do you know a child who could benefit from chiropractic care?

How early should a child get adjusted?

It’s never too soon to have your children adjusted. Subluxations can occur at any time. The first one may very well have occurred at your baby’s birth. That is why parents who understand the importance of being subluxation-free have their newborns examined by their chiropractor as soon after birth as possible. By correcting subluxations at an early age, the damage that inevitably comes from functioning at less than optimal levels can be prevented.

The longer a subluxation is present, the greater the damage. In addition, the longer a subluxation is present, the longer your child’s body will continue to “reproduce itself” (i.e., grow) in the wrong way! "As the twig is bent, so grows the tree!" Many people who come into a chiropractor’s office for the first time as adults would have had far greater potential for regaining their health if they had received regular chiropractic care as children.

Chiropractic During Pregnancy

Chiropractic care can be quite helpful during all stages of pregnancy. This period of rapid development, hormonal changes, the laxity of connective ligaments, and shifting of weight- bearing structures, may cause many pregnant women to experience low back pain. Chiropractic care can be very helpful besides helping to relieve the discomfort many expectant mothers experience; chiropractic care helps normalize nervous system function. This is an important component of overall health.

The benefits of chiropractic care may also be noticed during delivery. Many Chiropractic patients report that their deliveries were faster and more comfortable than deliveries previous to chiropractic care!

Your Doctor of Chiropractic will take special precautions with you during your pregnancy. Modifications to the table or adjusting techniques are made during each stage of pregnancy. Pamper yourself and your baby with regular chiropractic checkups.

Chiropractic for Seniors

Regardless of age, when spinal damage goes uncorrected, the body deposits calcium on the surface of adjacent bones that are not moving properly.

If neglected long enough this splinting effect can result in complete fusion. This worsening process is called Subluxation Degeneration and can occur throughout the spine. Researches recognize several phases of decay.

Phase One: Usually seen as the misalignment and malfunction of the spine. Normal spinal motion, curves and disc spacing are altered. Because the body is so adaptable, this early phase can exist without the warning of pain or other symptoms. If left uncorrected, the degeneration continues.

Phase Two: Recognized on X-ray views of the spine visible bone spurs and rough edges of the vertebrae. Soft tissues, such as discs and ligaments degenerate from the lack of normal joint movement. Again, pain or other symptoms may not be present.

Phase Three: A lifetime of neglect may cause the eventual fusion of malfunctioning joints. Atrophy, permanent nerve damage, and soft tissue degeneration are prevalent. Reduced mobility and impaired nervous system function diminish one's quality of life.

Does Degenerative Disc Disease cause back pain in older people?

Possibly, but not necessarily. When thinking of the answer to this question, it is important to first understand the purpose of "pain." Pain is an indicator that there is something wrong. Pain is a symptom that is brought on to tell you to make a change. When what you have been doing is not working, it is time for a change in your life. We should all be thankful for pain, as it warns us to make a change.

Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD) is a condition that can cause pain, but not always. It is a form of arthritis that affects approximately 9% of children without causing low back pain at all! So therefore, DDD does not just affect older people, and it does not have to cause pain! So what do we do about it? Well, subluxations cause your spine to not function properly. Adjustments improve the nervous system and help the spine work properly, therefore preventing degeneration in the spine.

Chiropractic for Accidents

Whiplash is the most common injury resulting from riding in a car that is struck from behind or that collides with another object. When the head is suddenly jerked back and forth beyond its normal limits, the muscles and ligaments supporting the spine and head can be overstretched or torn. The soft, pulpy discs between spinal bones can bulge, tear or rupture. Vertebrae can be forced out of their normal position, reducing range of motion. The spinal cord and nerve roots in the neck get can stretched and irritated. While the occupants can suffer considerable soft tissue injury, the car may be only slightly damaged.

The resulting instability of the spine and soft tissues can result in headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, pain in the shoulder, arms, and hands, reduced ability to turn and bend, and even low back problems. As the body attempts to adapt, symptoms may not appear for weeks or even months later.

The chiropractic approach to these types of injuries is to use specific chiropractic adjustments to help return spinal function. After a thorough case history and examination, the doctor will recommend a series of visits to help restore proper motion and position of the spinal bones. If caught early enough, inflammation can be reduced and scar tissue can often be minimized.

Consult your Houston Doctor of Chiropractic before enduring constant headaches, depending upon addictive pain medication, or submitting to surgery!

Mind Body Connection

A special intelligence, inside the trillions of cells of your body is a “special something” found only in things that are alive. The greatest thinkers since the beginning of time have been fascinated by this special something.

You have a special “intelligence” that knows to beat your heart, digest your food, ward off infections, heal a cut, and help you adapt to the environment.

Doctors of Chiropractic refer to this vital life force as innate intelligence. Fortunately it requires no conscious thought. It has nothing to do with being “smart” and it works perfectly…unless there is some type of interference.

Your nervous system, consisting of your brain, spinal cord, and all the nerves of your body help control your innate “life expression.” This intricate web of delicate nerves is in touch with every cell, tissue, organ, and system of your body. Any disruption, irritation, or change in the ability of your nervous system to orchestrate the functions of your body can set the stage for disease and ill health.

One of the most common nervous system disruptions is the vertebral subluxation. When bones of the spinal column lose their normal motion or position, they can rub, choke, or irritate the spinal cord and nerve roots. This is why your chiropractic doctor is interested in innate intelligence.

Removing interferences to the function of your nervous system allows your body’s inborn healing ability to do its job.Your doctor does not heal. He or she gets results by helping you restore your inborn ability to heal yourself.

What is Chiropractic?

The practice of chiropractic is based on sound scientific principles. The existence of the nervous system as the primary control mechanism of the body is an undisputed scientific fact. It’s relationship with the spine is the focus of the practice of chiropractic.

What is Chiropractic

The spine develops in utero to provide two primary functions: (1) allow for freedom of movement and (2) house and protect the spinal cord. When the vertebrae of the spine become misaligned through trauma or repetitive injury, two major consequences will result: (1) the range of motion becomes limited and (2) spinal nerves emerging from the spinal cord are compromised. DCs use the term "subluxation" to describe such disruptions. Interruption of nerve flow can eventually lead to pain, disability, and an overall decrease in the quality of life. Conversely, the removal of that interference has been shown to have significant, lasting health benefits.

DCs use the term "subluxation" to describe such disruptions. Interruption of nerve flow can eventually lead to pain, disability, and an overall decrease in the quality of life. Conversely, the removal of that interference has been shown to have significant, lasting health benefits.

Through the adjustment of the subluxation, the doctor of chiropractic endeavors to restore normal nerve expression. The body is then able to respond appropriately to any imbalance in the system, thus relieving symptoms and restoring health.

Chiropractic doctors take a natural approach to health. Their education places special emphasis on anatomy, physiology, pathology, neurology, biomechanics, X-ray, spinal adjusting techniques, and related subjects. This demanding curriculum prepares chiropractic doctors to locate and help correct nervous system dysfunction that can cause disease and ill health.

Before graduation, there is a closely supervised internship at the chiropractic college clinic. This gives doctors valuable hands-on experience with actual patients. Before beginning practice, your doctor passed rigorous National Board Examinations. Then he or she applied to the licensing board and passed an even more difficult test, before being granted the privilege to practice. A chiropractic education never ends!

Most doctors complete many hours of post- graduate instruction for their annual license renewal. Virtually every doctor attends seminars, scientific symposia, and reads professional journals to keep up with the latest research. Your doctor is well equipped with the education, skills, and clinical experience needed to detect, reduce and help prevent the Vertebral Subluxation Complex. About Scoliosis & Braces

What is Scoliosis?

According to the National Institute of Health, Scoliosis is an abnormal curving of the spine. Your spine is your backbone. It runs straight down your back. Everyone’s spine naturally curves a tiny bit. But people with scoliosis have a spine that curves too much. The spine might look like the letter “C” or “S.”

Most of the time, the cause of scoliosis is unknown. This is called idiopathic scoliosis. It is the most common type. It is grouped by age.

  • In children age 3 and younger, it is called infantile scoliosis.
  • In kids age 4 - 10, it is called juvenile scoliosis.
  • In older kids age 11 - 18, it is called adolescent scoliosis.

Scoliosis most often affects girls. Some people are just more likely to have curving of the spine. Curving generally gets worse during a growth spurt.

Other types of scoliosis are:

  • Congenital scoliosis: This type of scoliosis is present at birth. It occurs when the baby’s ribs or spine bones do not form properly.
  • Neuromuscular scoliosis: This type is caused by a nervous system problem that affects your muscles, such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, and polio.

Usually there are no symptoms. But symptoms can include:

  • Backache or low-back pain
  • Tired feeling in the spine after sitting or standing for a long time
  • Uneven hips or shoulders (one shoulder may be higher than the other)
  • Spine curves more to one side

Signs and Tests

Your chiropractor will perform a physical exam. You will be asked to bend forward. This makes your spine easier to see. It may be hard to see changes in the early stages of scoliosis.

The exam may show:

  • One shoulder is higher than the other
  • The pelvis is tilted

X-rays of the spine are done. It is important to have x-rays, because the actual curving of the spine may be worse than what your chiropractic doctor can see during an exam.

Treatment

Treatment

Treatment depends on many things:

  • The cause of scoliosis
  • Where the curve is in your spine
  • How big the curve is
  • If your body is still growing

Chiropractic Adjustments can greatly help with pain associated with Scoliosis. If you are still growing, your chiropractor might recommend a back brace. A back brace prevents further curving and can correct curvature. There are many different types of braces, however we recommend one that is dynamic and adjustable.

Braces

SpineCor® was developed in the early 1990s. It was developed to correct or stop progressive scoliosis... Learn More about Scoliosis Braces and SpineCor®

What is SPINECOR®?

SpineCor® was developed in the early 1990s after rigorous research and clinical trials by a team of 65 researchers based at Ste Justine Hospital in Montreal, Canada.

It was developed to correct or stop progressive scoliosis, principally in children with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS).

SpineCor® treatment is now used in 20 countries around the world and over 10,000 patients have been successfully treated.

SpineCor® treatment is different to conventional non-surgical treatments which are all essentially rigid or semi-rigid braces.

SpineCor® recognizes and attempts to control not only the progression of the spinal deformity, but works to rebalance and strengthen the abnormal musculature, improve posture and to reinforce and integrate neurological feedback.

SpineCor® treatment for adults was developed in 2004 as an evolution of the paediatric treatment. Very quickly it became clear that SpineCor® treatment on adults could produce small but important changes in their spinal alignment, with the most significant effect of this being pain relief.

Clinical experience during the two year development of the brace involving 200 patients demonstrated pain relief within a few hours of being fitted in some cases, with 90% of patients reporting pain relief within six weeks of use.

SPINECOR® TREATMENT FOR CHILDREN

The SpineCor® Dynamic Corrective Brace was developed in the early 1990s after rigorous research and clinical trials by a team of 65 researchers based at Ste Justine Hospital in Montreal, Canada.

SpineCor® treatment is different to conventional non-surgical treatments, which are all essentially rigid or semi-rigid braces. SpineCor® recognizes and attempts to control not only the progression of the deformity, but works to rebalance and strengthen the abnormal musculature, improve posture and to reinforce and integrate positive neurological feedback.

The SpineCor® Dynamic Corrective Brace consists of two sections: The first section consists of the pelvic base (1), the crotch bands (2) and the thigh bands (3). Its role is to act as an anchoring point and support for actions applied to the patient's trunk by the corrective elastic bands.

The second section consists of the bolero (4) and the corrective bands (5). This is the part designed to make the correction of the scoliosis curve. The fitting of the corrective bands is specific for each patient and depends on the type of curve.

Benefits of the SPINECOR® Corrective Brace:

  • It can provide stabilisation or correction of Idiopathic Scoliosis from a 15° Cobb angle and above.
  • It is fully flexible, allowing normal body movement and growth.
  • It allows children to lead a normal life.
  • It is worn easily and comfortably under clothing.
  • It increases children’s treatment acceptance, helping to achieve better results.

SPINECOR® TREATMENT FOR ADULTS

The SpineCor® Pain Relief Back Brace is an innovative approach to spinal treatment in adults, providing pain relief and postural rehabilitation.

Clinical experience during the two year development of the brace involving 200 patients demonstrated pain relief within a few hours of being fitted in some cases, with 90% of patients reporting pain relief within six weeks of use.

The brace is typically worn 8-16 hours per day in order to initiate changes in posture. After several months of wear, it is often possible to reduce the wearing time and maintain the same level of pain relief.

The SpineCor® Pain Relief Back Brace is primarily aimed at treating back pain caused by:

  • Adult De-novo Scoliosis
  • Degenerative Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis in Adults
  • Chronic Antalgic Scoliosis
  • Spinal Stenosis related to spinal misalignment
  • Hyperkyphosis
  • Postural Scoliosis
  • Post Traumatic Scoliosis

Benefits of the SpineCor® Pain Relief Back Brace:

Pain: The primary treatment of the SpineCor® Pain Relief Back Brace is pain relief, however postural improvement is directly related to pain relief and is therefore an added benefit.

Posture:. The postural changes achieved using this brace are patient specific and are defined by the clinical and radiological features of the patient’s condition. Often, changes in posture will result in a reduction in pain and help prevent a worsening of the scoliosis.

Progression: Changes to the patient’s posture will help to prevent progression of the scoliosis curve and can sometimes even reduce the curve slightly. In all cases, x-rays are advised to optimise treatment. Please note, significant correction of Cobb angles in adults will rarely be possible and should not be a significant treatment objective.

The first section consists of the pelvic shorts (1). The shorts act as an anchoring point and support the actions applied to the patient’s trunk by the elastic corrective bands.

The second section consists of the bolero (2) and the corrective bands (3). This is designed to apply the corrective movement to the scoliosis. The fitting of the corrective bands is specific for each patient and depends on the patient’s type of curve/spinal deformity.
